║ TWO FLOPPY SIZE CHRISTMAS CONCERTS ON TWO DISKS ║
╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
╔════════════════╗
║ 1989 EDITION ║
╚════════════════╝
These two "Christmas Concerts", each on its own floppy disk, are each
about 20 minutes long. There are twelve carols in a concert (and thirteen
on the disk) with a holiday introductory sequence created by a special
batch file and three tiny utilities. There are a total of 24 different
carols on the two disks put together.
With this 1989 version, you can play the concerts with an introduction
in the Spanish language instead of just English. Also, you can make your
own concert by choosing your own carols and the order in which they will be
played. As always, the carols can be played one at a time by entering
their name at the DOS prompt. You can use CMENU1 and/or CMENU2 both as a
guide and to play several carols at once.
These music files will play on just about any IBM-compatible computer.
You don't need to install special cards or other equipment to play them.
They will self-adjust their timing with the speed of whatever computer is
playing them. 8086, 8088, 286, 386 and PS/2 have all been successfully
tested although you may have trouble with certain 386 machines operating at
25 or 30 Hz or more. You also don't need any gadgetry, add-on cards or
even a color monitor such as CGA or EGA (but if you have one, and you know
how to set your screen colors, GREEN ON RED seems to be best).
The carols range from two to five harmonic parts which is far more
elaborate and musical even than music found in IBM-compatible game
programs. They also repeat two or more verses so go they go on a lot
longer than game music possibly can. You will probably enjoy them as
background music, but if you want, you can sing along because their keys
were set according to ordinary choral singing.
If you would like to put them all together on a hard disk, make sure
to make a directory for them first, then use the COPY command to copy all
the files into that directory. It will then be possible for you to play
carols from either floppy disk together in your own concert or even
concerts one after the other. (See your DOS manual for more information on
directories and making BATch files with COPY CON, especially using
COMMAND /C.)
If you have preschool children who are able to identify letters of the
alphabet, you may wish to load the carol names onto a hard disk menu such
as Automenu for the child to play the carols without supervision. This not
only encourages alphabet training, but inspires the child to explore and
gain confidence with the computer. Older children can benefit by spelling
the names at the prompt.

Carols can also be played one at a time or in a series at the
option of the user. They are named using "X-" because they are
special for Christmas and to show they are different from other
music files you may have.
The three tiny BAT utilities can be reused in other batch programs.
BLITZEN echoes a line in reverse video. DASHER induces a measured pause
between commands. DONNER specifies placement of a line on the screen.
The XMAS.BAT file is also a demonstration of syntax and use. Concerts
are much enhanced by presetting screen attributes to GREEN ON RED.

All carols were recorded using Pianoman software (v.4). Pianoman is
available on countless bulletin boards and shareware user networks. If
you are particularly interested, another of my disks, "Pianoman Goes
Baroque" contains information on using Pianoman and your PC to make
music files of your own. Advanced musicians may also want to refer to
the information on my disk, "Pianoman Does Beethoven".
